Panchatantra, is perhaps the oldest collection of Indian Fables still surviving. It is written around 200BC by the great Hindu Scholar Pandit Vishnu Sharma. Panchatantra means "the five books". It is a "Nitishastra" which means book of wise conduct in life. The book is written in the form of simple stories and each story has a moral and philosophical theme which has stood the test of time in modern age of atomic fear and madness. It
guides us to attain success in life by understanding human nature.
Panchatantra is commonly available in an abridged form written for
children.

In the forest near by a village there lived a donkey who was abandoned by his master as he grew old. In the forest the donkey had befriended a jackal and both of them used to steal food from the near by farm. One day at night time both the jackal and the donkey visited the farm where the donkey expressed its desire to sing. The fox was completely against the idea as it was afraid that the song would wake up the farmer. Therefore it urged the donkey to sing only after it had left the farm. What happened next?

Once there lived a poor woodcutter. He used to cut trees in the woods. One day he was cutting wood on the bank of a river. His axe fell down into the river. The river was deep. He could not take his axe out. He sat on the bank and began to weep. Just then Mercury, the messanger of other gods passing by the jungle. He asked the reason of his weeping. The woodcutter told the whole story. Mercury dived into the water and brought a golden axe. The woodcutter refused to take it. Mercury again dived and brought a silver axe. The woodcutter did not take it either. Then he brought an iron axe. The woodcutter took it gladly. Mercury was much pleased. He rewarded the woodcutter with the other two axes.

In a rich kingdom there was a tall and majestic tree in which there lived a crow couple and near by was the home of wicked cobra. Once it happened the crow couple went to collect food; leaving their eggs behind. In the evening on their return the eggs were missing. This happened again and again. crow teach a lesson to cobra he made a plan. As per plan the crow went to the queens palace and flew away with an expensive necklace. When the guards gave chase, he dropped the necklace outside the cobra's hole. The cobra is finally killed by the guards in order to retrieve the necklace. the crows live happily forever.

Two cats were prowling together. One of the cats saw a big cake and mieued. The other jumped up and picket it. They were fighting for cake. But there was no solution. Just then, a monkey passed by. He thought "What foolish cats they must be! Let me make use of this chance."He came to the cats and said The monkey split the cake into tow parts. He shook his head and said, "Oho! One is bigger. One is smaller". He had a bit of the bigger and now said "Oho! This has become smaller now". He ate from the other. And thus, he went on eating from part to part and finally finished the whole cake.
